The Madden brothers make a splash for World Water Week

For World Water Week, the Madden brothers Joel and Benji are spreading the word about the water crisis: 4,200 children die every day from waterborne diseases, but “we want to make that zero,” said Joel on Larry King Live.

Throughout the week the brothers have also planned coverage with People magazine and E! News. They are promoting UNICEF’s Tap Project and have become the dynamic duo of donation—supporting UNICEF water, sanitation and hygiene programs. The program gets restaurants to ask for a dollar donation for customer’s free tap water and each dollar is enough to provide one child with enough water for 40 days.

Monday night, the duo became a trio when Joel’s lady love, Nicole Richie, joined them at a cocktail event supporting UNICEF in LA. The event was sponsored by the Richie-Madden Children’s Foundation, the couple’s very own organization.

Nichole says that they were inspired to start the foundation when she was pregnant with their first child, Harlow. “Joel and I always say we feel so blessed to live the life we live. We also realize that Harlow is blessed to get to live a life about one percent of all the children in the world get to live,” says Nicole on her website.

Joel echoed her sentiment during his appearance on Larry King. When asked what struck him most on his trip to Africa, Joel answered, “the children.” “When they shake your hand,” said Joel, “it’s electric” said Benji.
