Vanessa Williams (a.k.a. Wilhelmina Slater on Ugly Betty) is opening up her closet for charity! She is going to share her wardrobe and her secrets for a successful career with underprivileged women. The actress is the new spokesperson for "Botox Cosmetic: Express Success"—a charitable education campaign to benefit Dress for Success.
The campaign kicked off just a few weeks ago in Grand Central with a “Rack Relay Race.” Vanessa and other participants raced to dress mannequins in the clothes donated for the cause. The clothes went to Dress for Success—an organization that provides disadvantaged women with professional attire as well as career support (and it was created by Do Something CEO Nancy Lublin!)
Vanessa understands how hard it can be to enter the corporate world and she hopes to empower women to take the plunge: “In these trying times, providing women with the tools they need to succeed personally and professionally is a cause close to my heart, and I can think of no better time to get involved.” With the unemployment rate at a staggering high it may seem daunting to try and get a job but with the right resources it is still possible.
The charitable Vanessa is also going to be honored on July 18th by Russell Simmons’ organization, The Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, at the “Art For Life” event in East Hampton. Until then, she will be working for this campaign and she wants you to pledge your support at the campaign website—you can even enter to win a trip for two to New York City to have lunch with Vanessa Williams herself.
You can also help Vanessa’s cause by helping to empower women and girls. There is a ton you can do like holding a clothing drive in your community. You can also participate in Do Something 101 this summer and help the 13 million American children living in poverty get school supplies.
