George as Sulu, via tvscoop.tv
George Takei, the original Sulu on Star Trek, is getting married. Following California's ruling on gay marriage, George and his partner of 22 years, Brad Altman, have started planning their wedding. George anticipated the ruling and had been planning on asking Brad, but Altman turned the tables: "We were at home in the kitchen with the TV going, and when the word came down suddenly Brad got on his knees in front of me. And I said 'what are you doing?' He said, 'George, will you marry me?' I said 'Yes. You beat me to it. I meant to ask you.'"
Takei, a Japanese-American, grew up in internment camps during World War II, and knows what it feels like to be excluded by law. He's really active in the Human Rights Campaign, especially Gay Rights in California, and has continued acting. He's currently in You Don't Mess With The Zohan as himself, which premiere's tomorrow night.

George and Brad have bought turqoise and silver weddings rings, and the ceremony will take place at the Japanese American National Museum in LA. On his blog, George wrote "We are overjoyed! At long last, the barrier to full marriage rights for same-sex couples has been torn down."
