In his first public interview since Sports Illustrated broke the story, A-Rod admits to using performance-enhancing drugs from 2001-03.

"I did take a banned substance. For that I'm very sorry and deeply regretful," Rodriguez told ESPN in an interview that will be broadcast tonight. "I was young, stupid and naive. I wanted to prove that I was one of the greatest players of all time."

Rodriguez added that the "culture" of the Major League was different in that era, saying it was "very loose."

Interestingly, in a 2007 interview with CBS's "60 Minutes," denied ever using steroids, human growth hormone or any other performance-enhancing substance.
