August 12: International Youth Day

Every day is youth day here at DoSomething, but Wednesday, August 12th is International Youth Day, as endorsed by the UN ten years ago.

IYF was created to bring awareness to issues that face our youth around the world, to recognize the contributions young people make to society and to celebrate their potential.

Young people make up more than 18% of the world’s population and with their ambition, energy and improving levels of education have strong potential to address environmental, societal and economic challenges. But:

  • 130 million young people remain illiterate,
  • 200 million live on less than one dollar a day, and
  • 10 million live with HIV and AIDS.

What can you do to bring attention to this reality? Use the notoriety of IYF to:

  • Hold forums, public discussions and information campaigns in support of young people focusing on youth issues and how they can be addressed.
  • Plan and organize performances to showcase the fact that youth contribute to the societies in which they live.

A democracy only works if the people are educated. For youth to make a fair sized and positive contribution to society, they need to be encouraged to do so (and shown how). There are many organizations that do this, like this website, but there is not enough. We need to find a way to get these ideas into schools and into the media. Any ideas?
