Last night President Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden sat down with the two men involved in an incident that has the nation embroiled in a race debate about police procedures in the U.S.
Sgt. James Crowley and Henry Louis Gates Jr. were invited to the White House following an incident on July 16th when Gates was arrested and accused of disorderly conduct after Sgt. Crowley responded to a report of a possible burglary at Gates' Massachusetts home.
After the arrest, the charges were dropped, but Obama got involved saying that police in Cambridge, MA “acted stupidly.” Obama toned down his comments later saying he could have put it differently and issuing a statement inviting the men to D.C. for a “friendly, thoughtful conversation.”
After the meeting Crowley told reporters that the discussion was “cordial and productive,” and that he and Gates would meet again to continue the dialogue.
