The California Supreme court has just voted to uphold Proposition 8, the ban on same-sex marriages which passed in the state in November 2008. The 1,000 people who were waiting outside the court building in San Francisco yelled “shame on you” when the decision was announced.
Some are finding hope in the fact that the court allowed the around 18,000 same-sex marriages performed in CA before the ban to remain legal, however many expect gay advocates and activists to protest the decision across the state today and tonight.
The court was voting on the ‘constitutionality’ of Prop 8, and many said that the proposition changes the state constitution, which requires a constitutional convention and not just a vote on a Proposition.
Opponents of Prop 8 argue that it denies same-sex couples fundamental rights guaranteed under the U.S. Constitution.
What do you think about the decision? Want to do something about gay rights in the U.S. or in your community?
