Clean energy debate kicks off in D.C.

Yesterday the House Energy and Commerce Committee began a debate of the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (ACES). The bill is meant to cap and decrease carbon pollution, create clean energy jobs, and encourage green technology development.

But The Breakthrough Institute reports that the bill is set to invest only a small portion of its hundreds of billions of dollars towards the program to cap carbon pollution. Instead a lot of the money will go to softening the blow to industries and consumers that rely on carbon and only 12% of the money will go to “clean energy investments.”

President Obama has, several times, pledged to invest $15 billion towards new clean energy investments, but the bill is outlined only to invest one-twentieth, at most, to one-sixtieth of this amount.

The committee will debate the nitty-gritty details of the bill, and with many big corporations relying on high carbon emissions to continue to do their work within their budgets, it looks like it will be a complex fight to change and pass the bill.

What do you think--with everything else going on, should we be pressuring President Obama to keep his promise and give the full $15 billion to the cause? Do you think more money of the bill should go directly to new clean energy tactics? Let us know, comment below.

Luckily, you don't have to wait for Congress to finally agree in order to save the environment. Here are few tips to make your carbon footprint smaller right now!
