Successful Saturday: 200,000 jeans, ready to go!

The DoSomething.org team was all smiles during its field trip to Paramus, NJ over the weekend to help sort through some jeans. But not just any jeans. We’re talking the 200,000 jeans we collected with Aéropostale from Teens for Jeans that will be going to the YMCA of Haiti! Whoo hoo!

The warehouse started off looking like a giant maze, but by the end, the jeans were all packed up and ready to go.

Look at how many boxes and how many helping hands it took to prep the jeans for shipping!

George on the lookout?

Amanda brought along a special friend.

Aria, Jess, and Mike are all smiles.

Run, team, run!

Last week, DoSomething.org’s very own Cassidy was at the New York Road Runners Club Night 2010 as part of the Greater New York team! The event was held at Hard Rock Café in Times Square, where all the teams and winners stepped into the spotlight to receive their awards.

Cassidy’s brother, Mike, was one of the runners nominated as Runner of the Year in the 20-24 year old age group. Cassidy and George (who was MIA, hmm…) also enjoyed a win— the team award— for being part of the third place overall team during the 2009 season. Congrats, boys!

The day that Nancy met Bill...

Remember when Nancy was in Davos a few weeks ago? She was there for the World Economic Forum and as a Young Global Leader, she had the chance to chit chat with former President Bill Clinton!

Bake-Off

We talk about it on the bio section of our site. We talk about it in our intern postings (which are now live at http://www.dosomething.org/about/team/internships). Now we have proof:

This scrumptious creation was made for us by Chef Mike Fantini.

We just had the most delicious bake-off one could possibly imagine. The theme was chocolate so there was no limit to the options. We had peanut butter dream brownie bars and chocolate marshmallow dripped cake. Crunchy rolled nut drops and cupcakes with cookie crumbles. YUM.

The winner though? Hands down the top prize of the day goes to our Grants Intern Sara. Her brownie cupcakes topped with milk and white chocolate fudge blew us all away. As the only intern who entered, we are oh so impressed! Three cheers to Sara!

Interns Emebeit and Chandra enjoying the winning treat!

DoSomething.org Visits Chicago!

Even though we are at the office in the middle of a "snowmaggeddon", we just sent half our staff to brave the weather and travel to Chicago! Why, you ask? Well, we are heading to the Windy City for the Pepsi Refresh Project Idea Seminar!

Through its new Pepsi Refresh Project, Pepsi is helping move peoples' ideas for positive impact from wishful thinking to reality. In 2010, the Pepsi Refresh Project is giving away more than $20 million in grant money to fund ideas that will refresh the world and lead to positive change.

Pepsi is looking for young people 17-25 years old to participate in the Pepsi Refresh Idea Seminar, where you will create a plan for making your idea to move the world forward a reality and learn how to apply for (and hopefully win) a Pepsi Refresh grant. Our staff is going to be there to take students through the entire process, from developing an idea and plan of action, to applying, and creating a strategy for getting the most votes.

And last, but certainly not least there will be lectures by Fonsworth Bently and Asher Roth and a performance by Ryan Leslie!

Live in Chicago? Come out to the Harold Washington Library Center THIS SATURDAY and learn how to score Pepsi Refresh Grant Money and say hi to our crew!

Why are we doing this? Cause we care about YOU! We want you to succeed in changing the world and if someone is going to give you a lot of money to do that, we will help you! Check out refresheverything.com for more info!

Hope they bring us back some fun pics! :)

A Message for Amputees in Haiti

Did you know there are 50,000 NEW amputees in Haiti right now due to the earthquake? When Josh Sundquist found this out, he wanted to DO SOMETHING. This subject hits close to home for Josh, as he lost his left leg when he was 9 years old. Since then, Josh has gone on to accomplish amazing feats (he is a Paralympic ski racer!) and he wanted to instill some of that hope in Haitians who might be facing a new life after the earthquake.

The PSA that was produced was the brainchild of Luc Castera, a Haitian born entrepreneur who lives in Virginia. He saw Josh's videos on YouTube and thought his message would be an encouragement to those affected by the earthquake.

Luc has arranged for the video to be dubbed into Haitian Creole and shown as part of the Cinema Under the Stars, a mobile outdoor movie theater that brings entertainment and inspiration to rural Haitian communities.

The amputee video will be shown to tens of thousands of Haitians during 260 showings in 52 communities on Cinema Under the Stars’ current tour.

You can check out the video and the story behind it here:

How much do we love our interns?

A LOT!

In fact, we pay our college interns for all their hard work. Interns are the backbone of DoSomething.org and we entrust them with A LOT. There are no coffee runs here! Our interns are researching, writing, calling, meeting, campaigning, and creating all the time. In 2009 we had a total of 32 college interns that worked a total of 8,180 hours! WOW!

According to Independent Sector, the dollar value of volunteer time for 2008 is estimated to be $20.25. (The hourly rate for 2009 has not yet been released). Using that rate, the work our college interns did for us in 2009 is valued at $165,645.00!!

This post is a big THANK YOU to everyone who has interned, volunteered, or helped us along the way. We wouldn't be where we are today without the dedication and commitment of our interns!

Interested in interning with us here in New York City? Stay tuned for our summer intern postings which are going up on our website in March. We have an awesome ten-week paid internship program - and we want you!

There is Cassidy!

Look closely enough and you will find our very own Cassidy in the background of this screen shot! Yes folks, this is an actual image from ESPN the night of the superbowl. Cassidy had a mission to get on the screen, and he succeeded! We couldn't be more proud...

Whoo hoo! George is back!

During our ENTIRE stay in Miami, Nancy was hounding George to shave his beard. She was apparently not such a fan. George resisted as long as he could, but finally cut her a deal. If they walked into a barber shop and the barber agreed he needed a shave, he would relent. Luckily for George, the barber insisted on just a trim. Nancy seemed please with that and quickly e-mailed out this picture with "Whoo hoo! George is back!" as the subject.

In return, Nancy hopped in the chair and got a streak of her hair dyed blue - Do Something blue! Yes, you read that right, our CEO (and Chief Old Person) dyed her hair with our logo color. How awesome is that?!
