Islands’ plea to the world

At this week’s Pacific Forum, a group of small Pacific Island countries off the coast of Australia issued a statement to the global community yesterday, which stated they are worried about the “serious and growing threat posted by climate change to the economic, social, cultural and environmental well-being and security of their nations.
The seven countries behind the statement are concerned about rising sea levels, and many of their countries are perched only a few yards above see level.
This was just one of several appeals made by the group of island countries, who hope to once again put their plight before the world at the upcoming December 2009 negotiations on a new global pact to cut down on greenhouse gas.
Because of the countries’ small population sizes and poor economic standing, they don’t have a lot of sway at global forums, but Australia’s prime minister has promised to fight for their protection now and in the future.
If you want to fight rising sea levels, see what you can do for the environment.
