New law gets San Francisco composting

A few weeks ago we told you about San Francisco’s green and clean recycling policy and their new study that showed that two-thirds of San Fran trash could actually be composted or recycled.

So like the eco-conscious city that they are, they took action! Tuesday, the city's Board of Supervisors voted to approve Mayor Gavin Newsom’s proposal for a mandatory composting and recycling law. It’s a bold move, but as Newsom said the bay city already has the best recycling and composting programs in the country and “we can build on our own success.”

The new law will require every home and business to have three different color-coded bins for their waste. A blue bin for recycling, a green one for compost, and black for trash. If people don’t sort out their waste properly, they are subject to a fine, although officials are reassured residents that warnings will be issued first. City officials say they don’t want to create a “trash police,” but simply help people be more eco-friendly in their everyday habits.

What do you think of San Francisco’s new law? A good idea or is it too over the top? Do you wish your city would pass a similar law? Fight for environmentally friendly legislation and let your officials know!
