Obama OKs torture tribunals

Today President Obama will resume the Bush administration’s military tribunal system to put some of the prisoners at the US prison in Guantanamo, Cuba, on trial.

He halted the system in his first week in office but has decided to resume the trials of several high-profile terror suspects.

Obama’s officials say that the system is updated to include more legal rights and differs from the tribunals of the Bush days. Still, some legal rights groups like the ACLU are concerned that the trials will carry on some human rights abuses. The executive director of the ACLU said the new approach is still “fatally flawed” even with the new changes.

This comes after a week of criticism directed Obama and his administration for not releasing photos showing prisoners allegedly abused by members of the U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan. Obama said that releasing the pictures would spread resentment of the U.S. and could put military personnel in the Middle East at greater risk.

So what do you think? How is Obama doing this week? Do you agree with his policies about the photos and the trials of suspects at the U.S. prison in Guantanamo? Let us know, comment below.

If you agree with the ACLU and want to get involved to save the rights of people around the world, see what you can do to protect human rights.
