Our nation's capital gets green

In March, thousands of eco-activists took to the streets of Washington D.C. to demand that a 99-year-old U.S. Capital Power Plant stop burning coal to heat the offices of our senators and congressmen.

Well, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Friday the power plant won’t be seeing a 100th year of coal-burning. The plant will stop burning coal and switch over to cleaner natural gas. Even though natural gas is still a fossil fuel that releases CO2 into the atmosphere, it’s much cleaner and better for the environment than coal.

The plant is the only coal-burning facility in D.C. and the local government has complained that it worsens the air quality and is bad for the health of residents and workers in the area, especially children.

The plant provides heat, steam, and hot water for Congressional buildings so you can rest assured that now the nation’s Capitol building will be much greener.

Did you know that the White House is not quite green yet? Help the Obamas go green.

These green activists clearly did their part and it worked! See what you can do help the environment.
