Palin faces down Fey on SNL

A few weeks ago we reported on how comedians have jumped at the chance to poke fun at the candidates, ragging on everything from Sarah Palin's winking to Joe Biden's hair, John McCain's awkward sense of humor to Barack Obama's celebrity aura.

Political comedy, namely Ms. Fey’s hysterical impersonation of Gov. Palin, has lifted Saturday Night Live’s ratings 50% compared with last year. The segment has become a hit on youtube and served as a reference point in political discussions, including on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday.

This weekend Palin took Fey on face to face in her first, highly anticipated appearance on SNL, giving the show its biggest overnight rating in more than a decade.

Given how much SNL has mocked the VP candidate in recent weeks, the moment when Fey and Palin passed each other on stage was about as tense as when McCain and Obama shook hands before their final debate last week.

SNL took on a tricky task: they had to make good use of the friction between Palin and Fey while keeping the sketches funny and staying within the boundaries of what Palin's camp will find acceptable. They passed the test with flying colors.

Check out the hilarious antics below.

Thanks so much, DS, for posting this! I couldn't catch it on Saturday night. I think it's amazing that they were able to pull it off even though the two women are clearly not each other's biggest fan. SNL must be rolling in the dough from their increased viewership during the election. Maybe they should donate some of that to the campaigns!

I thought it was a great idea for SNL to have Sarah on, although I would have liked to see her do a little more comedy and a little less standing around. It's insane that Sarah gave such a big boost to SNL's ratings!

I love, love, love Tina Fey's impressions of Sarah Palin. Of course they are fabricating her personality and antics... but the sad thing is that I find them things that I could see her doing? Which makes me find it even funnier.

And when Sarah Palin came on SNL I think I died! Like the person above me said, I wish that she did a little bit more than stand around... But you know. Having her on was a great thing for SNL and people like me :)
