After a drastic drop in salmon spawn, commercial salmon fishing will be banned in California and Oregon for the second year in a row. The National Marine Fisheries Services recommended the fishing ban last week and is expected to finalize it in the next month.
The ban will be lifted for a 10 day period in certain areas of California, but even without fishing this season the salmon count will barely reach the industry’s minimum goal. Simply put, “there are just no fish,” said Zeke Grader, the executive director of the Pacific Coast Federation of Fishermen’s Associations.
Researchers say the drastic decline is due to destruction of river habitat and increasingly bad ocean and river and conditions. See what you can do to protect the rivers and create more sustainable agriculture.
