San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom took to his blog yesterday to announce a new recycling plan for the city.
Right now, San Francisco keeps 72 % of waste outside of its landfills and Newsom touched on their recycling programs, setting the goal of 75% recycling by 2010 and zero waste by 2020.
The city recently completed a study and found that two thirds of trash could have been recycled or composted, giving Newsom and San Francisco residents more motivation to find a way to recycle all that stuff! Newsom proposed a city ordinance that requires recycling for all homes, businesses and schools to help with his ambitious zero-trash goal.
San Francisco is already one of the greenest city and its Board of Supervisors approved a deal with a solar power energy to triple the city’s renewable energy capacity starting in early 2010.
