Sotomayor faces another day before the Senate

Judge Sonia Sotomayor faced another day of confirmation hearings in the Senate today, dealing with questions about her stance on abortion and gun control, two big issues that often make their way to the Supreme Court.

Republican Senators were expected by many to give her a hard time, but so far the hearings have gone on without any signs that Republicans will try to block her from becoming the newest judge on the Supreme Court.

One such Republican, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, said that he worries her court decisions may be biased. He believes that some of her speeches “suggested gender and racial affiliations in a way that a lot of us wonder, will you take that line of thinking to the Supreme Court.”

But, he went on to say: “to be honest with you, your record as a judge has not been radical by any means. ... You have, I think, consistently, as an advocate, took a point of view that was left of center. You have, as a judge, been generally in the mainstream.”

The Senate Judiciary Chairman, Patrick Leahy said he plans to put a vote to confirm Sotomayor as a new Supreme Court Justice on their calendar for next Tuesday.

What do you think? Are statements like Lindsey Graham’s out of line? Do you think Sotomayor should be our next Supreme Court judge?
