'Fat' Tax Coming to US?

Nearly 34% of Americans are obese. And we soon might be following in Europe’s footsteps with a new “fat” tax. (Cya late night pizza and large coke.)

A recent study from the British Medical Journal found that a high tax on unhealthy foods could stop increasing obesity rates. Denmark, France, and Hungary have already imposed the tax. Here’s a list of food/drinks that have seen a tax hike (warning: some of your favs might be on this list):

  • Butter, milk, and cheese
  • Pizza
  • Oil and processed food
  • Soft drinks
  • Pastries, salty snacks, and food flavorings

What Can You Do?

  • Weigh in with your comments below. Do you think this is an effective way to fight obesity? Or are there better steps to take?
  • Write to a letter to change (or save) the food served at your school.
  • Create a healthy living cookbook and share it with friends and family.
