Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher’s recent murder-suicide came as a tragic shock to many fans. And maybe even more surprising is that this isn’t new to the NFL.
Out of 32 NFL teams, 21 of them have at least one player who’s been charged with domestic violence or sexual assault. What the what? Even scarier, these charges all occurred THIS YEAR.

According to journalist Justin Peters, who uncovered these stats, even though the “database is thorough, it is likely not totally comprehensive.” Read: the number of domestic violence cases may be even higher.
Currently, about 1.3 million women (each year) are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner. Get the facts:
- Women age 20 to 24 are at the greatest risk for nonfatal intimate partner violence.
- Boys who witness domestic violence are twice as likely to abuse their own partners and children when they become adults.
- 85 percent of domestic violence victims are women.
