Pageants: Good or Bad?

beauty pageant

DoSomething.org has seen its fair share of pageants. We've had great projects that allow young people with cancer or young people with disabilities to participate. But some find pageants to remain sexist and bad for self-esteem. Has this long-held tradition go out of style?

We asked members what they thought, and here are some of their arguments as to why it's both good and bad.

GOOD

BAD
Helps build confidence

Objectifies young women

Improves public speaking Causes issues with body image
Promotes social good/charityThe bathing suit competition (need we say more?)
ScholarshipsSpotlights only one kind of beauty
Showcases your talentsHigh-heels on super young girls = no (think "Toddlers & Tiaras")
