Access Hollywood anchor and correspondent Shaun Robinson has lent her voice to making positive change. One Girl, One Voice is a movement she started that encourages teen girls to unite their voices to create change. (Beyoncé was definitely on to something when she sang: Who run the world? Girls!)
Check out our interview with Robinson below.
What is the driving idea behind One Girl, One Voice: A Million Ways to Make a Difference?
The idea is to motivate girls to help those in their communities and around the world. It is a powerful feeling to know that you are helping to make the lives of others better. Also, I want girls to be recognized for the POSITIVE things they are doing. As we know, girls oftentimes get attention for bad behavior and we want to turn that around!
Who or what inspired you to start this movement?
When I was writing my book Exactly As I Am, on Girls and Self-Esteem, it became really clear that the most surefire way to true self-esteem is to take the attention away from yourself and put it on others less fortunate. Girls told me that they felt so much better about themselves when they were helping others.
How can young people get involved? Is this movement across the US?
This One Girl, One Voice Movement is GLOBAL! All you have to do is post a story about how you are helping others. Tell us how you are using your VOICE for the good of others. It could be helping clean parks, assisting seniors, gathering food for shelters, or volunteering at an orphanage overseas. There are so many ways to join the movement!
What is one really memorable/inspirational story from your work?
What stands out for me about the OGOV Movement is the fact that NO act of volunteering is too small. Girls are proud to say they are helping others on all levels. You never know how much you are helping people by just spending sometimes showing you care.
Any advice for young people that you would like to share?
My advice to young people is that giving back is so very important. We live in a "Me, Me, Me" society and it's not until you can focus on helping others that you truly know about powerful and special you are.
