Because of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” law, George Zimmerman has not been arrested in the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
The law allows citizens to use deadly force when threatened by another person. According to a Tampa Bay Times survey, the number of cases where “Stand Your Ground” has been used increased in the past year and a half. Since 2005, the “Stand Your Ground” law has been invoked at least 130 times statewide. In most of the cases, the person who killed another did not have to face trial.
Trayvon’s killing has spurred nationwide outrage among citizens. At a town hall meeting in Sanford on Wednesday, more than 400 people were inside the Allen Chapel AME Church and more than 200 rallied outside, hoping to have the “Stand Your Ground” law repealed.
