“You know that family is going to be there for you no matter what. My dad gave me a freakin' kidney! But it's also the families that you create outside of your family. And you really find out what kind of people you're friends with.”
The “Modern Family” star revealed in Seventeen’s latest issue her battle with kidney disease. Hyland shared that she’s been dealing with the pain since her diagnosis with kidney dysplasia at age 9. "I would be in a lot of pain a lot of the time. If I didn't get, like 12 hours of sleep— it felt, like, none at all," she told “Good Morning America” Monday.
But thanks to her dad (a perfect organ donor match) she got a kidney transplant in April. (Woot Woot!) The 21-year-old is now recovering and has teamed up with the George Lopez Foundation as a youth ambassador. The org looks to raise awareness about kidney disease/organ donation, as well as create positive change for communities in need.
“I have a kidney in me now!,” she exclaimed. ““If you ask, 'Why me?,' well, why not you? You know? It makes you the person that you are today."
What can you do?
