Vote Up or Shut Up

November brings more than turkey and football this year. But, maybe the media buzz around the presidential candidates already alerted you to that fact. In anticipation of what’s sure to be a highly charged race (who are we kidding, isn't it always?), we’ve put together a list of facts about young voters to kick off our new campaign: “Vote Up or Shut Up.”

1. Around 46 million 18 to 29-year-olds are eligible to vote in the 2012 election. (Baller!)
2. Young people will make up one-third of the electorate (voting population) by 2015.
3. 51 percent of young people voted in the 2008 election. This is a 2 percent increase from 2004.
4. A recent Gallup poll found that 58 percent of 18 to 29-year-old US registered voters say they will “definitely vote” in November.
5. However, this number is 20 percent lower than the national average (78 percent). This deficit is also much higher compared to the 2008 election which saw only a 7-point difference.
