Move over Superman. Dad was (and still is) the ultimate superhero growing up. He knew how to play sports, he was super strong, and he taught us how to ride our bikes. We know—dads are epic. But that doesn’t mean they are invincible, especially when it comes to their health. Get your dad a great gift for Father’s Day by joining our I <3 Dad campaign. Urge him to get his blood pressure tested. Don’t worry if he resists, we have five easy responses to help you convince him.
Dad says: I feel great kiddo. I have no reason to go to the doctor.
You say: Dad, 1 in 3 U.S. adults has high blood pressure and doesn’t know it. It has no symptoms so it’s hard to tell if you have it. The only way to be positive that you don’t is to get a quick blood pressure test. I promise I will have you back in time to catch the rest of the game.
Dad says: I have way too much stuff going on. I have no time to see a doctor.
You say: I know you’re super busy, so on our next trip to the drug store, let’s make a stop near the pharmacy and use their free blood pressure monitor. It only takes 5 minutes and it is completely painless. It can add years to your life!
Dad says: I exercise every day. I am as healthy as can be.
You say: Exercising is very important, but there are some risk factors for heart disease that can’t be controlled. The only way to be sure you don’t have it is to get your blood pressure checked.
Dad says: I have been through a lot. If there is something wrong with me, I can tough it out.
You say: Sorry to break it to you dad, but this isn’t as “tough” as watching your favorite sports teams lose. High blood pressure is no joke. Although it can cause serious heart issues, it's really easy to manage if you get your blood pressure checked.
Dad says: I don’t have health insurance. You know we can’t afford it.
You say: I know this may seem unbelievable, but getting your blood pressure tested is free. You can walk into any drug store and get your pressure tested. If you do have high blood pressure you can enter a patient assistance program or get free medication. You can find these resources on the internet, through social workers, senior centers and social service organizations.
Sign up for our I <3 Dad campaign and enter for a chance to win a $4,000 scholarship. Remember, it can save your dad's life!
