why it's important:

i feel like racial barriers hold society back. you can clearly see the cause of them in the partisanship showed in Washington. if you can influence people at a young age about equality, they grow up with the idea.

the plan of action:

mediate large groups, break the ice, talk about issues, get them informed, and taught about equality

it is important to me , because i lost a friend due to bullying , and nobody should ever feel like people dont care about them

the plan of action:

this groups plan of action is to raise awareness to bullying , and help have a place the kids can come to and talk to people about what they are going through to know they are not alone

how you can get involved:

others can help by reaching out to us and telling us if they have a problem, or know somebody that has a problem , so we can help them through it

  1. Dred Scott vs. Sandford (1857). During slavery, Sandford claimed to own Scott, even though the two lived in a free state. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that slaves of African descent in the United States could not be citizens under the Constitution.
  2. Plessy vs. Ferguson (1896). Louisiana resident Homer Adolf Plessy, a seven-eights Caucasian man, was arrested for refusing to move from a white-only train car. The court ruled that segregation was legal as long as it was “separate but equal.”
  3. Powell vs.

I care about others safety, and I know if I was someone in need of education, I would want someone to do this for me.

the plan of action:

I'm beginning with applying for a grant so I can get the website created, and once the website is created we're going to start sharing our information on facebook / twitter. I'm hopefully going to be able to create a club at my school to teach students about the issues my organization is going to provide.

We believe that one of the biggest challenges facing young organizers is navigating internal group dynamics. Whether it is teens, college students, volunteers, parents or community members fighting together for a specific cause, there are inevitably moments in these struggles when group members are faced with difficult decisions and potential conflicts. Often times these complex internal dynamics can be the biggest barrier a group may face when working on a campaign or project.

Through workshops on non-violent communication, consensus decision making and non-hierarchical leadership, we hope to promote alternative strategies and tools for organizing at the grassroots level. Our goal is to alleviate much of the stress and anxiety that can come from working in a group setting, and provide creative techniques for collaborative work.

We also believe that the way we are with each other reflects the way we are in the world. By this we mean that if we can radically change our relationships to be more harmonious, peaceful and cooperative, we have the capacity to create entire communities in the same way.

why it's important:

The members of The Collective first met in 2007 while participating in a study abroad program. There were 28 students on an epic journey across the world, and establishing effective and democratic group norms was a key component of our trip. For us, the exploration of these issues came first out of necessity. In order to survive our nine months together, we had to devise ways to interact, make decisions and handle conflict.
It was during this time abroad that many of us discovered the importance of collaborative decision making and ways in which non-hierarchical leadership can create a space where all voices are respected and heard. Ultimately, by the end of our time together, we were deeply committed to working with each other and others on developing new processes for communicating and organizing in groups.

the plan of action:

Since 2010, we have taught numerous workshops to college students, young adults, small progressive nonprofits, and co-ops in the region. We have promoted our work through word of mouth and other networks with which we are familiar.

In addition to teaching in-person workshops, we have written, designed and published materials on communication and community-building techniques.

With a seed grant of $500, we could significantly expand the content and scope of our workshop, as well as produce a more comprehensive resource guide and workbook on consensus and alternative forms of decision making.

how you can get involved:

Others can be involved by attending our workshops and teaching others! We believe that the material and content of our workshops and publications should be widely distributed, and that everyone can benefit from these resources.

If others have an interest in teaching the materials with members of the collective, and getting directly involved, we would be happy to discuss that possibility.

A Family Community is a program I am desigining to benefit every individual in our community, not only residents and locals, but the community as a whole. This includes surrounding areas and even alternate states. We aim to provide Disater education, job readiness, disater preparedness seminars, dating volience information, a place of refuge for volience over comers, a place for homeless individuals to get food, and clothing and opportunities for job search, and job placement. We want to prevent teen pregnancy, but all the same provide help to those who have already had children. We promote family stablility. We want to educate individuals on healthy eating, and living a healthy lifestyle as well. We plan to this not only by branching out and starting partneships with exsisting organizations, but by putting in hard work, and sweat ourselves as well. We plan to involve individuals that seek help in unimaginable ways.

why it's important:

This is imporatnt to me because, I grew up in a single parent home; and felt sad and alone. I want individuals to understand that not every house hold is the same, and that it is okay to be different. I understand the importance of education, and i am seeking to futher my education. I want every individual that I encounter to understand this concept as well.

the plan of action:

*Conduct meetings with community leaders(i.e. Community pastors, non-profit organizations, mayor)
*Get Schools involved( with the job I already have I have easy access to recruiting teens, and volunteers)
*Get the community aware.....(i.e.: Facebook, local news, news paper)
*Recruit Volunteers/ Board members (i.e. Church goers)
*Set up banking account
*locate a building for headquaters (i.e.: unused city building, or church building)
* Contact local food banks set up patnerships
*start partnership with local DHR

how you can get involved:

Individuals can help by contributing non perishable items, volunteering, making donations, and participating in the program

In the Kajaido Village in Kenya, drought is ongoing. The women in the village were left behind three years ago by their men, who were trying to find a new grazing area for their cattle, and haven't heard back from them; they expect them not to return. The women, in order to survive in the drought-ridden village and make a living, requires a well, a day-care center with solar panels for electricity, and job education to make an income to support their children. The well will help them farm their own food and prevent them from walking three hours a day to get water, and the day-care center will allow the children easier access to learning instead of walking two hours to school every day escorted by their mothers. It will also allow the women to work in the day and be able to make a living and support themselves on their own, without the men. Economic sustainability is the best tool for helping developing countries (a village, in this case) to take control of their lives.

why it's important:

This project is very focused around women's rights, because if the women do not find jobs within a year of graduation from high school they will most likely be married off to any man that will take her, with no further hope for a job of her own. A well and the day-care center will provide the women with jobs and their own way of subsistence agriculture, so they may persevere in the ongoing drought. As a young American girl it is taken for granted that everyone in the world has the opportunity to turn on a water faucet and have water delivered to them. Since I began working with Both Your Hands.org, I have learned how priviledged we are to live in the country we live in. Even scarier is the idea that young girls do not have the same opportunity for education that we do, which directly impacts their ability to make choices about their lives and their bodies. I want to be an agent for change, teaching others on how we, as a global society, can make a difference.

the plan of action:

We have been involved with the Kajaido project for approximately two years raising money to build a basic school structure. Raising money for supplies to send to the village in order to build the day-care center and the well has been a challenge. Ultimately our goal is to provide job education for the village, so that the women may find jobs and provide for themselves and their children. We have already risen enough money to install a cement floor, four posts, a roof, and two teachers for one year. We still need to acquire walls, furniture, essential teaching tools such as chalkboards and books, solar panels, and a generator. The priority for our project is the well, which will drive all our other projects.

how you can get involved:

We want to publicize to draw awareness through social media networks to adopt the village in support of their needs by various school districts in the Western New York area. In order to do this, I want to present to the local TV, radio, and newspapers about our scholarship award and how others can get involved. As a music student, I would be willing and able to perform a benefit concert as part of our social media blitz, partnering with local corporations.

Youth Voice in the Community. While youth in San Mateo County are passionate about a wide spectrum of issues, and many are actively attempting to make a difference, there is very little acknowledgement of these efforts.

why it's important:

Having worked with a wide array of youth struggling with a variety of issues, from eating disorders, to criminal records, to running away from home, I have seen first hand how important it is to youth to have their voice heard. I am passionate about Youth Empowerment, and strongly believe that when a platform is given to youth to excel and succeed, they will far exceed expectations.

the plan of action:

Host the 2012 San Mateo County Youth Conference, a Conference entirely run by-youth and for-youth. It is featuring workshops throughout the day which are all run by youth under the age of 25. From panel discussions of Teen Parents, to youth workshops by teens with incarcerated parents, to jiu jitsu seminars, to film showings of "Project Happiness" and "Miss Representation" - the Conference will be chock full of options for youth to attend. The event will also have a "Policy Panel" featuring local and state elected officials who will be answering youth questions, a keynote speaker talking about Rap and Hip-Hop Activism, community partner tables, and raffle prizes. The event will be held March 17th, 2012 from 930AM-5PM at the College of San Mateo. More information can be found on our website at: https://sites.google.com/site/smcyouthconference/ or on our Facebook page at: www.facebook.com/smcyouthconference

how you can get involved:

We need volunteers on the day of the Conference to help run the day! We also need youth attendees, and youth to get the word out about this incredible event!

What I have been trying to do to help the world become a better place is to build a website not only to gather people to see my website, but to action off items for a profit that will be given to a specific cause. I have built a website that I want to use to help gather in people to come and talk, listen, view, and relate to the world by viewing music videos, movie trailers, video game trailers, and other topics I hope to add on later. The auctions page will be used for the purpose of showcasing my creations, and the selling of my creations. If this goes well in the future, I also would like for others to be able to donate their items on my website for a cause as well.

why it's important:

When I was younger, I was always considered to be nature, environmental, and human sensitive to the negative effects on these subjects. The burning and cutting down of trees, pollution of the world’s drinking water, hunting down animals to be used as trophies, abuse against women, and so many other events. But I was never able to do anything to help because when it all comes down to it; the best way to help any cause is to offer money. And who could blame people for needing money to help others because the world seemed to run highly on currency. I really wanted to help, but I could barely help myself in that situation. Even though I have become older, I still was not able to help those that I wanted to help and the longer I was waiting do to something, the worse everything was becoming, especially in my area.

the plan of action:

I have already created a website that is available for others to view. I have even had some people travel into my website. But it’s not exactly the greatest looking website on the planet. I still lack some experience in making good graphic logos to put onto my website. But I am still learning and I am willing to make major changes to the website until I can create a website that everyone will be proud to visit. I have included a picture with my project idea that will become the new logo for my Relax and Tell website. And because of this, I am certain now that I can make more original graphics and help improve the outlook of the website. My new website is being made and will soon take the place of the old website. This should gather more people to view my website and will gather many more supporters to my cause.

how you can get involved:

I know that my website is not entirely finished right now, but the best way to help me improve my vision is to come to my site, click on some of the ads and banners on the website, and bookmark the pages in case you do decide to buy something from their web site. This way, I can get a small commission from every product bought from each of those ads on my website. If I can get even a small commission rate from the ads on my site, I can make even more improvements to the website that could become more interesting.
