The community of Pujehun, Sierra Leone has been greatly affected by the country's ten-year civil war. One of the groups most impacted has been the youth in the area. School dropouts, teenage pregnancies, violence, and sexually transmitted diseases are just some of the issues with which we are working. At the same time, there are countless cultural and traditional elements of the community that reveal its beauty and strength in the face of these challenges.

As Jersey City's public schools strive to meet core curriculum standards as well as No Child Left Behind benchmarks, teachers are now more than ever "teaching for the test." These guidelines put added pressure on the school district and, as a result, there is less of an emphasis put on liberal arts.
For social change to be attainable in our community, our young students must be challenged creatively. Expressing one's individuality through art and music is essential to a well-rounded education.

For the past five years, 14 year-old Connor Dantzler has been giving thousands of people in crisis something to smile about. In 2003, Connor realized that hospitalized children and adults could benefit from the gift of laughter. He felt that humor provided a way for helping patients to relax and be distracted in a positive manner, which could promote the physical, emotional and spiritual recovery processes.

Its hard being a child. However, its harder to live in underprivilaged circumstances and remain a child. Underprivilaged children dont have the same oppertunities as families who are well off. Strings With Wings, Inc. wants to give underprivilaged children or at risk youth an oppertunity to learn music. By allowing at risk youth to learn music, we give them a chance to transcend their circumstances and open a door to a brighter future.
