Madison SOS (Speak Out, Sister!)

I launched Madison SOS (Speak Out, Sister!) at age 15, in the spring of 2007. I wanted to do something to address several issues in my community of Madison, Wisconsin relating to young women: poor self-esteem, political apathy, and little knowledge of how they as community members could affect grassroots change. I contacted several groups that work with girls and women to create a comprehensive program to address some of these issues.

Northern Colorado Leadership Retreat

After attending numerous leadership camps and conferences, I have seen that many people in schools are leaders, yet they don't know the right way to go about being a leader. I am planning a leadership retreat that would encompass eight high schools in the Northern Colorado area, where 5 leaders representing different clubs or groups learn how to work together, what type of leader they are, how to improve school issues, and how they can be a better person as well.

I also help educate the children on the importance of keeping their teeth clean and why its an important aspect in their daily routine.

Project No-Confidence at Ohio University

I chose the "education" topic as my cause because that is precisely what I was struggling for. As an out-spoken student activist, I defended proper practices in the university environment. At Ohio University-- as well as countless other universities and colleges around the country-- the system is so extremely "top-down" that the students have absolutely no control over their education, the environment in which they live, decisions which are made on their behalf, as well as processes that are completed behind closed doors by administrators and trustees.

Bequia Sunshine Project

The William and Mary Bequia Sunshine Project hopes to improve the current education conditions of the schools on the island of Bequia in the Caribbean. The trip involves two weeks of painting the local high school, tutoring children with special needs and high school students, and helping to run after school activities. This is the first year that the trip will be run totally by students from the College of William and Mary. In the past the program has been run through the Education Department and has focused on tutoring and evaluating.

Field Day at Summit School 07'

All of the members of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) decided to have a field day at our Residental school in Upper Nyack,NY on June 5th, 2007 . We had a dunk tank where the teachers who volunteered would go in and get "dunked". We charged $1 for 3 throws at the target. As well as having a dunk tank we had a pie eating and throwing contest. The pies were thrown at different teachers and staff members at our school. We charged $1 for 2 pies. The pie eating was won by the girl who came up with the idea for field day, Shelby Cohen of Hewlett, Long Island.
