Energy Conservation

the problem:

I am trying to conserve energy within the Rutgers community. I want students to use bicycles throughout the campus instead of cars in order to save energy and relieve more stress on the environment. I am trying to collaborate with the Bike Rental Pilot Program to install new secure locks for bikes that incorporate a swiping system for better security. The proposed bike rack lock system Boltted (Best Of Luck Trying To Extract Dis), will have locking bolts that can withstand bolt cutters because of its long diameter.

why it's important:

This is important to me because I want to raise awareness in conserving energy and reducing carbon emissions. Many students drive their cars just to go from class to class. There are many bike racks all around Rutgers and I want to raise awareness about them to students. I want to encourage students to utilize bikes to transport them to their destinations and make a difference in the community. The Bike Rental Program is always trying to convince students to use bicycles on campus. I feel that my design will assist them in their goal.

the plan of action:

My plan of action is to design and create a new innovative way of locking a bicycle securely. One of the biggest problems people do not use bikes is the fear that they will get stolen. The new designed rack will feature bolt locks which are bot cutter resistant and locks both the wheels and the frame of the bike. This is something necessary to fend thieves away. A swiping system to lock and unlock the bolts would be proposed to increase security and generate an interest in using the bike rack.

how you can get involved:

People can help by offering their services. Engineering majors would be extremely useful and help with marketing would be great!

the problem:

Wahiawa is a small town that residents often cannot take pride in. Many residents of Wahiawa, our hometown, are not aware of the consequences of energy waste. We hope to raise awareness and participation in energy conservation, as well as strengthen community bonds and pride in Wahiawa.

why it's important:

Our team is made up of Wahiawa community members who are passionate for a healthy environment. We want to be able to take pride in where we come from and improve the environment at the same time.

Our project will accomplish this by creating a photo mosaic mural that will be publicly displayed on a newly built Wahiawa Transit Center. Pictures that will go on the mural are of residents and businesses that employ energy saving acts at home or at work. Each picture that is collected will also be submitted with a pledge to start and/or continue energy conservation.

the plan of action:

The goal is to compile 3,000 photos of energy conserving community members into one cohesive mural of a pineapple--the classic symbol of our town's plantation history.

Our first step was to contact our local city councilman, representative, and senator for support. Once we had their permission to display the mural on the wall, we researched the costs of the supplies we need for the project. Then, we started contacting major local businesses and organizations that will help us construct the mural.

Our current steps are to raise funds for the supplies and gather community photos for the mosaic mural. We are raising funds by soliciting donations and applying for grants. Photos are being collected through booths at community events and collaborations with local elementary schools.

The photos are also being made more convenient for community members. We are offering a photography service that utilizes green screen technology. Participants simply have to stand in front of a green screen while hold a prop that depicts an energy conservation act. We replace the green screen with backgrounds of notable locations in Wahiawa.

how you can get involved:

This project has very big goals and is costly, but it will have very big benefits as well. Right now, our team needs monetary support to continue on with our goals of buying supplies for a community photo mosaic mural. We would also appreciate more photos to add to our mural. Anyone who can advertise or contribute to our cause would help us advance greatly in collecting more community photos.

11 Green Facts About The Super Bowl

  1. Other than Thanksgiving, Americans consume the most amount of food on Super Bowl Sunday.
  2. More than 53.5 million pounds of avocados and 28 million pounds of chips are consumed on Super Bowl Sunday. In total, over $50 million is spent on food.
  3. In one stadium alone, past Super Bowls have generated an average of over 65 tons of trash each year.
  4. Although footballs are called “pigskins,” they were actually made from pig bladders. Footballs are now made from cowhide, taking about 3,000 cows to make enough footballs for one NFL season.

Have teachers and students unplug chargers when devices are done charging.

Reasons why they should:
  • excess energy (a.k.a. vampire energy) is still being drained from the wall even when electronics are charged
  • leaving a charged electronic plugged in decreases batter efficiency
