Energy Conservation

Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards

The Southern Appalachian Mountain Stewards (SAMS) is a local community group in Appalachia, VA dedicated to stopping the destruction caused by surface coal mining. I work with SAMS, a group of local activists who are outraged by the devastating effects of surface coal mining in the coalfields of Southwest Virginia. Surface coal mining, also known as strip mining, often takes the form of "mountaintop removal" which is exactly what it sounds like.

Port Perry High School Enviromental Club

A group of dedicated student from Port Perry High School in Port Perry, Ontario looking to make an environmental impact on their school and in their community. Having being formed for merely a few months, the group has already taken part in many initiatives such as tree planting in both the school yard and community as well as a student"buy-out" to watch the compelling documentary "An Inconvienent Truth".

Pledge to Try Veg!

The Pledge to Try Veg! Rally started in May 2006 as a bet between friends to see if those who ate meat could last even two days without consuming meat. We have decided to make this an annual event, and to focus more on other aspects to educate others. Vegetarianism is about more than just eating meat, it's a lifestyle choice concerning many hot issues, pollution (factory farms pollute water, air and land); conservation (forests are sometimes cut down to build farms, the land becomes exhausted from constant use.

Energy Justice Summer Ohio

Energy Justice Summer Ohio is part of a grassroots movement catalyzed by students and youth to promote clean, just energy options, and to oppose the development of dirty energy facilities in the United States. EJS Ohio is a program designed for youth, students, and community members, which will focus on training, community organizing, and service in a community heavily impacted by dirty energy.

Saving Some Green

With the help of my younger brother, we posted flyers all over our town on some tips to save energy. These tips came from the DoSomething top reasons of global warming and how to save energy. Here in my town, the majority of the kids either walk to school or are driven by a parent. This causes a bus to arrive and pick up only one or two kids. WASTE OF GAS!!! So, although global warming is a large issue, it has receded into the background. With these flyers we're hoping to remind everyone how to save energy and how to save some cash as well.

Light Bulb Bonanza

Go Compact. Compact fluorescent lightbulbs produce the same amount of light as regular 60 watt bulbs but use only 15 or 20 watts. They are therefore three or four times as energy efficient as normal lightbulbs, and last longer.  The Deerfield Do Something Club, in partnership with the Deerfield Environmental Club, has been promoting the use of compact fluorescent lightbulbs.

TIP DS Club: Late Night Park Pick-Up

TIP Teens got together and walked from one park to another [about 1/2-3/4 miles apart] and picked up trash in the parks and along the road. It was really fun because you got to meet new people and socialize, while helping the environment. A local news channel even did a feature story on getting it organized.
