Healthy Living

Delta Evaluation Team

My interest in the public and non-profit sector is a result of my passion to help empower the marginalized. When it was time for me to choose my academic and career path I was drawn to the liberal arts: particularly political science, public administration and policy. A focus in ethics and gender issues, and the exposure gained as a member of a public service sorority has continued to shape my priorities within this realm. Accordingly, much of my projects are in the field of the social sciences, with a strong focus in nonprofit management and leadership.

Helping educate others about Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and building a support network for students with TBI

TBI Raiders was originally set up to not only help but also see that students who had sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury, also known as a TBI, succeeded in both school and life.  In 2004 after representing Oklahoma youth with disabilities in Washington Dc at the National Youth with Disabilities Leadership Conference, I decided to turn TBI Raiders into a volunteer service.  This is a volunteer service for students living with and without disabilities.  By becoming involved in this they would be able to gain not just job skills but leadership skills, interact with leaders, make a difference i

Team Hunger Force

Team Hunger Force is an organization started by Josie D. and Scott L. to raise food, money, and awareness about world hunger and how it plagues the world. We recently held our first fund raiser in our hometown (Cheboygan, MI), which consisted of a door-to-door canned food drive, a raffle for products from local businesses, bakes sales, and a concert series in the evening. While in the future we will not be hosting identical events, we are going to continue to promote awareness and try to make a difference across Michigan.

Living a Healthy Life

Being heathly is something that means more to me than anyone could ever imagine. Thats why I'm majoring in Dietetics, and doing this project. A few close friends and I found thousands of healthy and tasty recipes and gave them out to hundreds of people, hoping they would change their lifestyle. When I recieved positive feedback I became too excited. You would never know how good you could feel from making someone else happy. It is truly a gift all in its own.

the Bed-Stuy Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project

I started the Bed-Stuy CSA, because families in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn are unable to purchase fresh vegetables in the neighborhood. This lack of access to fresh, healthy food contributes to the neighborhood’s significant health epidemics: according to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Health of Central Brooklyn report, residents of Bedford-Stuyvesant suffer a rate of heart disease 30% higher than the NYC average and are two times more likely to have diabetes than the average New Yorker. In fact, 1 in 3 Bed-Stuy residents is obese.
