Integrated and Sustainable Healthcare for a Rural Nicaraguan Community

We currently work in the impoverished region of Chacraseca, Nicaragua, just east of Leon. This area was devastated by Hurricane Mitch in 1997 and is still recovering from the effects today. There are many infrastructure gaps within the community that lead to the propagation and duration of the problems caused by the natural disaster. One of these gaps is a lack of access to health care for many of the inhabitants of the community. Distance to medical care centers as well as lack of general health knowledge are the two greatest contributing factors to the community's poor health status.

Victims

Our rural law enforcement agency is the first responder to victims of crime. We currently need to purchase first aid kits to assist victims who have been involved in accidents, shootings, domestic violence, etc. Funding from "Do Something" would allow us to purchase five first aid kits and may help us save a life.

Nursing assisting in Hospitals

I am helping the need in health care. Problems include medical insurance, obesity, abuse, neglect, proper proventative care, knowledge of nutrition etc.. problems are being solved by offering my own knowledge and compassion to patients while assisting licensed health car providers. I am also assisting with my personal experiences in fitness and nutrition and the way to treat your body and how to stay healthy. I encourage patients to keep their heads up and to do all they can to help save their lives as well. their health is in their own hands too.

BHS Winter Dreams

Every year my school, Blythewood High School, hosts a program called Winter Dreams that gives to the needy. We have various activities within the association so anyone and everyone will have an oppurtunity to give. Some of our focuses include younger children in foster care, children with the Sickle Cell disease, and those in need of food and clothes. One of our activities is called Stocking Stuffers. Stocking Stuffers are christmas stockings that are filled with small items, such as toys or even toiletries, donated from the students at our school.

How altering social institutions indirectly and directly affect public health care systems in third world countries

The issue I am trying to solve is public health care in third world countries. Because of corruption, these people living in developing nations are forced to continue living in poverty with little to no health care. There is no room for movement between social classes because the people living in poverty do not have the opportunity to succeed. From my time spent working in a health clinic in Ecuador, I've realized that other institutions in developing nations directly and indirectly affect the public health care system.

Uproar Over New Guidelines for Mammograms

After being told the opposite for decades, this week women were told less mammograms are better and breast self exams are useless. But not everyone agrees and some breast cancer survivors are lashing out at the new recommendations.

The new guidelines come from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, an independent group of experts convened by the Department of Health and Human Services. The task force reviewed evidence it considers solid and found that:
