The mission of the Sankofa Institute for Youth Development is to provide the young people of Union City, N.J. with tools to make change and become productive citizens in their local and global communities. Sankofa is dedicated to motivating and supporting youth in becoming globally conscious, socially aware, confidant, and highly dedicated young adults who strive to make the world a better place. Our focuses are college preparation, global awareness/social justice, self empowerment, and community service.

Capital Culturel Africain, translated means African Cultural Capital, is a new journal which will work toward increasing, preserving, distributing and creating objectified forms of African cultural capital. These cultural goods can be transmitted physically as an exercise of economic capital, and symbolically as cultural capital.

I am looking for funding to volunteer with Soft Power Health, a clinic run by Dr. Jessie Stone in Kyabira, Uganda that seeks to fight malaria through prevention and education.
Working through Soft Power Health, i will be helping to conduct education sessions that explain how the malaria parasite is transmitted to humans, how it makes them ill, and how people can protect themselves from getting malaria in the future. i will also be distributing mosquito nets to local populations and assisting in the clinic itself.

This is a mentoring project designed to connect youth in the Baton Rouge community involved in athletics with a college athlete, professional athlete or retired athlete who shares skills and a passion for a specific sport. The concept is based on the idea that many young people today look to sports super stars as role models from a far, but never truly experience the real effects of having a real life athlete mentor to model the appropriate work ethic, character or just one-on-one interactions with someone who can attest to the real journey of an athlete.

"Operation: Music Aid USA" is a non-profit group my daughter works with to raise money to send musical instruments to wounded soldiers in our veterans hospitals in the US and Iraq.
My 9 year old daughter wanted to help increase the collections placed in jars around our town. She came up with the idea of playing her violin locally and asking for donations to buy musical instruments, such as guitars, harmonicas, keyboards, etc. All of the money goes to the instruments. Doctors report the soliders are less lonely and get better faster when they have the instruments.

I'm a university student and I am setting up an evening of awareness and fundraising for HIV/AIDS in my local community and on our college campus. What is so suprising about the college town of Iowa City is that while is has a large emphasis on medicine and health, there isn't a lot of talk about HIV/AIDS. It is my hope that I can change this. The event will take place on the National AIDS Day, Dec 1st, 2007. This night is meant to empower men and women of all ages and backgrounds and to help connect our local community in Iowa City, IA to our global family: the people of the world.

The Bear Hug Project is a project that I came up with I came up with to donate teddy bears, as well as a load of other things, to children in childrens hospitals and in foster care in the state of Florida. I came up with the idea for this project because I want these children not to feel as if they are neglected. I want to make them feel as if they are special because they ARE in fact special in every way. I would like to expand to hospitals and centers in the other 49 states as well. Besides donating teddy bears I plan on doing different projects and fundraisers with the help of others.
