Queen's Health Outreach: Guyana

My project is my involvement in Queen's Health Outreach, a university student run project that aims to provide sustainable, culturally-appropriate development through health and education promotion. Through this organization, I will be spending eight weeks traveling to Guyana to empower young people to be healthy and safe.

It's a project to help the diabetic patients. It allows the patients to get their glucose check, blood pressure check, and many more other things.

GREEN GIRLS

Help support the Green Girl Fund. This is a fund to help women in need of financial assistance. Primarily women who have had some sort of outstanding hospital bill due to pregnancy complications or miscarriages. We know that this must me a horrible obstacle to go through and we want to show them as women we understand. We want to show them that we are here to help and even if it is just by a little bit of money, prayers, and out encouragement, it is the least we can do. Please help us help these women.

During the rainy season, the village of Sikoro is cut off from everything, including the health center, the middle school, the market and the road to the capital by a river. It floods an enormous area and makes it nearly impossible to access these sites even in the direst of situations. This has an enormous impact on health, development and economy in the village.

H1N1: Not gone yet

That’s what the CDC is saying. In fact, the updated figures are triple the estimates the CDC issued just last week.

According to the new numbers, about 4,000 Americans, including 540 children, have died of H1N1 flu, and 22 million people have been infected since April, when the novel flu virus first surfaced. Contrary to initial impressions, health officials insist the increase does not mean that the disease has suddenly become more deadly or severe.
