HIV/AIDS: A crisis in the Latino community

October 15 is National Latino AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD). This day marks an opportunity to increase awareness of the devastating and disproportionate effects of AIDS in the Latino community.

The toll of AIDS in the nation’s largest and fastest-growing minority population has been largely overshadowed by the epidemic among African Americans, but in major U.S. cities, as many as 1 in 4 gay Hispanic men has HIV. This rate is on par with sub-Saharan Africa, but there’s a segment of the Latino population that’s increasingly at risk that few are paying attention to.

International AIDS awareness

Hey Guys,

I live in Rome, Italy and am a new high schooler here. Before I came here, I was really actively involved in clubs at my old school and did JHR, volunteered in Africa for Dartmouth University, and participated in the World Food Prize Youth Institute.

However, since I came to Rome, I haven't seen a single ad or commercial that promotes AIDS/ HIV awareness. I don't think you know how wrong that is. I live in a city where the World Health Organization, the United Nations, Greenpeace, and other humongous NGOs call home. I also live 2-3 hours from Africa.
