Open Your Eyes (OYE) is a group in Newfield High School that I co-founded in the mid 2006-2007 school year. OYE is a group, not a school funded club that is geared toward tackling world issues. This year we took action against global warming by starting a recycling program in our school. This involved painting and labeling boxes, distributing them into all of the classrooms, and recycling the paper each week. Once our recycling project was under way we raised money and supplies for save-a-pet totaling in approximately $600.

I created a non-profit organization in my community and high school to raise awareness and money for the victims of starvation and genocide in Darfur, Sudan. We have raised over 3,700 dollars so far and are expecting to raise over $6,000 total. Students in the local high schools are now aware of the conflict in Sudan and have shown interest in aiding those affected. I have organized raffles, the sales of over 350 "Stop Genocide in Sudan" t-shirts, a benefit concert, and coin drives. A large community event is in the planning stage currently.

Each student will use the Boston Women Heritage Trail guidebooks and walk the 2 trails to select four women trailblazers from either the Downtown or Beacon Hill sites and prepare a presentation of their accomplishments. The project will emphasize not only their contributions but also the importance that these women made history here in the Hub. These neighborhood women some world famous and other less known will be documented in each student’s walking trail log and map. All students will be required to include a woman of science or a site related to scientific inquiry.

Non-Profit designed to sponsor African, Sudanese girls to go to school in Kenya and eventually build schools in Sudan. The thought is that the educated women will teach their children and eventually end most educational problems in Sudan.

Nothing But Red is an anthology (in the works) of essays responding to a recent "honor killing" in Iraq. The victim was seventeen-year-old Du'a Khalil. Her crime was falling in love with a Sunni Muslim boy. In response to the tragedy, a group of people are collecting essays, short stories, poems, and visual art for an anthology that will be entitled "Nothing But Red." The title came from a blog post by Joss Whedon, who is best known for creating Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The phrase describes the look of Du'a's face in the video onlookers took on their camera phones.

THE PROBLEMS:
Nearly one in four children in Mali dies before the age of five. This problem is particularly bad in urban slum neighborhoods. Slum residents have few rights. Most are squatters who receive little help from their governments.Communities refuse to pay taxes until the government provides services, and the government refuses to provide services until the communities pay taxes. This deadlock continues indefinitely, leading to terrible infrastructure, crippling poverty, and poor health.

Me and my friends want to help save the people in Darfur. The reason we're doing this is because we believe that God wanted us to help others in need rather than kill them and if we didn't do anything to help them we would be killing them and we're not murderers! We plan on helping by holding a bake sale, carwash sponsered silences and anything else we can think of!

You probably thought genocide was over long ago, but about three years ago there was an outbreak in Sudan. People in Sudan are trying to make a life threatening journey to Chad where possibly they'll escape the terrors that torn down their villages and destroyed their families. These people need medical attention and basic needs such as water and food. I figured that somehow everyone could donate money to an organization to save the thosands of people.
