Obama reaches out to Muslim world

Billed as a “fence-mending mission” between the U.S. and Islam, Obama delivered a long-awaited speech Thursday at Egypt’s Cairo University.

During his oration, Obama quoted from the Quran as he expounded on the glories and rights of Islam, and addressed an array of issues including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, women’s rights, religious rights and democracy in the Muslim world.

Barring a huge surprise, Sonia Sotomayor is expected to be confirmed. Today she begins a marathon set of Capitol Hill with a line-up of meet-and-greets with 10 senators who will vote on her nomination to the Supreme Court.

Obama to pick first Latina for high court

Two anonymous sources have reported that the president will select the first Latina and third woman to wear the robes of a justice.

If confirmed by the Senate, Sonia Sotomayor, 54, will succeed retired Justice David Souter.

First black mayor in city known for Klan killings

Philadelphia, Mississippi is best known for the killings of three civil rights workers in 1964. This time around the town of 8,000 is making news for a good reason.

This week, the town elected its first black mayor, despite a 55% white majority.

James Young still remember the Ku Klux Klan tormenting his neighborhood. Blatant racism and hostility was the norm for his generation in the South.

So traumatic was his childhood that Young broke down in tears when discussing what it means to be elected the town's first black mayor.
