After our awesome talk with bullying expert Rosalind Wiseman a couple of weeks ago, we came up with an action guide on how to handle bullying, whether you're the victim or a bystander.

Starting a new school is hard, especially if you are new in town. Help incoming freshman and new students in your school by starting a mentoring program. 

Brainstorm

Get a committee together and think of an outline for the program. Use our example as a starting point.

1. Figure out your cause. What are you passionate about that you want to bring attention to?
2. Create your pledge. Be specific and concrete. Are you pledging to do something or to abstain from something? Here are some ideas:
• Pledge to recycle.
• Pledge to lower your carbon footprint.
• Pledge to lower your energy consumption.

Do you cringe whenever a classmate throws out a recyclable bottle, can, or paper? Help put a stop to this by starting a recycling program at your school. Here are the deets on how.

Get Dirty

Figure out how much your school wastes every day by collecting cans and bottles from students after lunch. This will provide tangible support when you’re approaching people with your idea.

Human Rights Day is the world’s opportunity to “advocate for the full enjoyment of all human rights by everyone everywhere.” In other words, today perfect day for YOU to take action on something YOU care about. Bullying? Homelessness? The environment? Whatever it is, use this guide for small steps that lead to a big impact.

Today marks the 71st anniversary of the Japanese attack that killed thousands of people and launched the United States into WWII.  Ceremonies are being held at Pearl Harbor in remembrance of the 2,390 service members and 49 civilians killed in the attack.  If a last-minute trip to Hawaii to attend a ceremony is not in the cards for you, here are some ways you can observe the anniversary.

What to Consider

• Will you help kids at your school, or travel to a nearby community that may need extra support?
• Is there an age restriction for tutors or students?
• Is there an application process?
• Where will you recruit tutors from?
• Will you offer general homework help or address a specific subject area?
• Which subjects will you cover? At what levels of advancement?
• Will the tutors be working one-on-one or can they lead group sessions?
• Where will sessions take place?
• What hours will people tutor?

1. Find a shelter. Search for one near you.

Do something (pun intended) about bullying in your school. Team up with friends and talk to a teacher, dean, or principal about it.
