Just when you thought Obama was the only one getting all the hip celeb endorsements, John McCain came at us from leftfield with a shocking endorsement from Daddy Yankee, the Puerto Rican Reggaeton sensation behind hits such as "Gasolina" and "2 Mujeres."
McCain suprised a gym full of bustling high school students by announcing that he had a suprise guest who grew up in Puerto Rico, and has been married for 15 years.
The students at Phoenix Arizona's Central High School went wild when Daddy Yankee strut out onto the gym floor dressed in a black fitted button-down, weighted gold chain, dark-shades, and signature bling-bling diamond studs. The Reggaeton king was a sharp contrast to the suited McCain.
The smooth-talking singer said that he was endorsing McCain because he believes in "his ideals and his proposals."
"He's been a fighter for the Hispanic community and I know that, me personally, I'm choosing the best candidate, because he's been a fighter for the immigration issues," Yankee said. "So, for me, he's the best guy to lead this nation."
How has Yankee set an example for youth voters? Yankee shared with the
L.A. Times that his hit song "Gasolina," is about "energy and independence." Other songs on his last album, which sold over 500,000 copies in the U.S. alone, include lyrics having about pride for his country.
Daddy Yankee is hugely popular amongst Spanish speakers in the United States. His most recent album, El Cartel: The Big Boss, which was released in 2007, was the most popular record in all Latin music categories, according to Billboard Magazine.
What does this mean for Obama? McCain will certianly be gaining recognition in the Latino community for his stance on immigration issues, and with a celebtiy like Daddy Yankee to support him, McCain might be opening the doors to attract a whole new set of youth voters.
