I am a huge believer in the power of film and art to inspire action toward creating social and global change. It stands to reason that those who pay to see cause-messaging movies are generally people who are already interested in social or political issues. Movies like Oscar-winnning An Inconvenient Truth have helped to change that by bringing the documentary format to the masses while scripted dramas like Blood Diamond mix in cause content with blockbuster casts and budgeting.
A new project launching in just over six months is asking change-makers from around the world to inspire others with short films of their own. Pangea Day, scheduled for May 10 and staged in 8 cities across the globe, is a film festival screening short movies created by people like you who have something to say about peace and compassion. Cameron Diaz, Meg Ryan, Angelina Jolie, and Goldie Hawn are some of the celebrity supporters who have already signed on to help publicize the event. (source)
Here's the trailer soliciting submissions. The website urges us: ask yourself this. If you had the entire world's attention for just a few minutes, what story would you tell?
My favorite aspect of the program is the take-action component:
Of course, movies alone can't change the world. But the people who watch them can. So following May 10, 2008, Pangea organizers will facilitate community-building activities around the world by connecting inspired viewers with numerous organizations which are doing groundbreaking work. (source)

i just saw Blood Diamond
i just saw Blood Diamond last weekend, and it's incredible. Not only is it a moving personal story, but it definitely doesn't shy away from showing you what our country's demands do to the people we get the supply from. It's appalling that our need for stature symbols puts hundreds of millions into the arms business, and tears apart lives on such a huge scale. And all for the sake of a little bling.
If I ever get a diamond, you better believe it's going to be conflict-free.
