This is amazing! Nice job
very inspiring!
I'm actually working on something a lot like this...just having trouble getting it all started!
If anyone has any advice on how to fundraise from a beginning stand-point, please comment back! I'll check this regularly just in case.
My project is actually overseas, so there is trouble with communication. I'm in the U.S. while the organization I'm working with is in Kisa, Africa. I am raising money for orphans and for medical supplies in this African village.
If you are looking to raise money aside from friends and family members, most people like to know that they are donating to a registered nonprofit (shows legitimacy and allows them to make tax deductible donations). When my friend and I began working with a grassroots primary school (www.Hamomi.org) in Kenya two year ago, we knew this was the first step to raising a significant amount of money. However, becoming your own 501(3)(c) nonprofit it a long and expensive process.
After doing some research we realized that there is a loophole in the law called "fiscal sponsorship". A registered nonprofit can take you on as a "project" giving you the ability to use their nonprofit status to fundraise on your own project. Most sponsors charge a small percentage for accounting and administrative fees, which is not so bad when beginning since you will need to have someone bookkeeping and doing your taxes anyway.
This to me was the first step in fundraising. Many organizations take on fiscally sponsored projects, it may just take some asking and research to find one.
Beyond that, use your resources when fundraising. Do you still keep in contact with any teachers from your old high school? Ask if you can speak to their students. Are you/were you a member of a church? Ask to speak there. Good luck!
