  1. I think I’m a great candidate, what should I do?

    Apply as soon as you can! We’ll be choosing 20 amazing applicants and awarding them $20,000 each. Don’t forget to check out the judging criteria first.

  2. What can the scholarship money be used for?

    The Foot Locker Scholar Athletes scholarship can only be used towards tuition and fees at any accredited four-year college for an undergraduate degree. The scholarship will be divided into 4 $5,000 increments and disbursed evenly over the duration of the of the four year period.

  3. When does the application close?

    All application materials, including recommendations, are due on January 9, 2012 by 5:00pm EST for all candidates (even if you live in Central, Mountain, or West Coast time zones).

    We will be contacting your recommenders after you submit the entire application so we strongly encourage you to complete the application early in order to give your recommenders plenty of time!

  4. Who can apply for the scholarship?

    The applicant must:

    • Be currently involved in high school sports, intramural sports, or community based sports
    • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0
    • Be college bound (accredited four-year college) anticipated in Fall 2012
    • Be born on or after 9/1/1991
    • Be a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident (you will be asked to prove citizenship and age if you win)
    • Officers, directors, members, and employees (including Store Associates) of Foot Locker Inc., Foot Locker Foundation Inc., or Do Something Inc. and any of their subsidiaries or divisions, are not eligible to apply; nor are members of the immediate family of anyone described above.
  5. I have a couple of students/mentees/team players that I want to nominate. How do I do this? Can I nominate more than one?

    Great! We’d love for you to nominate anyone you think is qualified — after all, you know their heart better than we do. If you know someone who deserves this scholarship, nominate them here. Interested in nominating more than one person? No problem — there’s no limit on the number you can nominate.

  6. What is the minimum GPA?

    You must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to apply for the Foot Locker Scholar Athletes program. Additionally, you must be college bound to an accredited four-year college anticipated in Fall 2012.

  7. What are the essay questions?

    For this scholarship, you will be required to answer the three essay questions below. Each essay should be between 200 and 350 words.

    1. How do you exemplify sportsmanship both on and off the field? Give specific examples.
    2. How have sports helped you grow into a strong leader? Provide specific examples of leadership activities in your community, school, and team. This might include: volunteer experiences, leadership roles at your school or youth groups, or helping a teammate in need.
    3. How will a degree help you grow both professionally and personally?

  8. How many recommenders do I need to have?

    Two non-family recommendations are REQUIRED in order to complete your application. One each from:

    • A current or recent Teacher or Administrator who can attest to how your character has contributed to your strength as a leader among your peers;
    • A current or recent Coach, Mentor, Teammate, or Community Member who can attest to how you have demonstrated great character on and off the field.
  9. Who should I approach for a strong recommendation?

    The strongest recommenders are people who are well-informed about your social action projects and educational goals. This should be someone who knows you well, but more importantly, can attest to the actions you have taken to improve your community, your team, or your school. Please ask your recommenders to speak about their experience with you and their thoughts about your work, your impact, and your collaboration with the community, if possible. They should be as specific as possible. We suggest that you send your recommender the judging criteria.

    Once you have confirmed your list of recommenders, we suggest you submit their contact information (on 3rd page of the application) so they can start working on them right away and meet the deadline.

  10. Help! I’m getting an error or "Access Denied" message when I try to apply. What should I do?

    If you are having trouble viewing the application, it is most likely because you have not verified your email address. When you created a log-in for DoSomething.org you were sent an email. In that email there is a link to verify your email address. Check your junk mail. If you can't find the email or are still having trouble, please submit a help ticket with our tech department. We'll get back to you pronto!

  11. How do I go back and edit my application?

    While working through the application, you can save your progress at anytime by clicking the "Save Draft" button in the top right corner. To go back to your application at a different time, you can simply return to the form and all your answers will magically appear (please note that you must be logged in to view your draft).

  12. What happens if my computer crashes while I am working on the application?

    Yikes! Computer crashes happen to everyone. To protect your information from being lost, make sure to FIRST write your essays in Word and then copy/paste them into the online application. Also, as you work on your application, periodically hit "Save Draft" to save your changes. We have no ability to access your application if your computer crashes before you hit submit, so please help us help you by making sure you have back-up copies of your essays.

  13. I’m having some technical difficulties trying to submit my application, who should I contact?

  14. Ok, I submitted. What now?

    Take a deep breath, pat yourself on the back, and hold tight. If you qualify for the next round, we’ll be back in touch in January to schedule interviews.

  15. How are we being judged?

    You will be judged in three different phases. During the first phase, a team of scholarship experts and celebrity sports judges will be reviewing candidates to learn how they embody qualities of a good athlete. In the second phase, the Do Something staff will conduct interviews (via skype) to gain more insight. Lastly, in the third phase, Foot Locker will decide the final 20 Foot Locker Scholar Athletes.
