Brian Hickey

Community Impact: Brian has served as the President of Students Organized for Service for three years, and Sports Editor of the school newspaper. He has also taken his commitment to service to a global level as the co-founder of the Engeye Teen Connection, working to support health and education initiatives in Uganda. His fundraiser, “ETC Bucks for Books,” raised over $10,000 for books and supplies, which he delivered himself on a trip to Uganda.

Brooke Wenig

location: Mill Valley, CA

college: UCLA

Community Impact: Brooke founded Project Green Lunch Club, a group that is dedicated to bringing healthier foods to her school’s cafeteria. Brooke is also the Vice President of Teens Turning Green and the school’s Environmental Club, making her voice heard by encouraging other students to become more environmentally friendly. Brooke hasn’t limited herself to her school, she shares her passion for the environment with the community by writing the eco-column for a kids’ newspaper (reaching 75,000 students in her area!) and giving speeches to inspire others to live healthier, greener lives.

Chandler Helms

location: Oklahoma City, OK

college: Southern Methodist University

Community Impact: Four years ago, Chandler started the organization Knitting for Troops, a not-for-profit that knits scarves to sell in local boutiques. With the proceeds from the scarves, Chandler creates care packages to send to troops from her community. Since its inception, Chandler has sent 240 care packages to Oklahoman soldiers overseas.

Christopher Hylton

location: Miramar, FL

college: New York University

Community Impact: Christopher has proven to be a leader on and off the field, serving as Vice President and Treasurer of the Key Club, participating in several community service projects raising thousands of dollars, and encouraging others to get involved. Christopher is also the founder and editor of JoblessTeen.com, a website for and by teenagers to help them discover their passions and write about what matters to them, the site has reached 20,000 visits.

Chuka Esiobu

location: Cooper City, FL

sport(s): Basketball

gpa: 4.0

college: Harvard University

Community Impact: Chuka was born with sickle cell anemia and at a young age, he underwent a stem cell transplantation that cured his disease. Years later, Chuka traveled to Nigeria with his family and was astonished by how little people knew about the disease. Inspired by this experience, Chuka started Reshaping the Sickle, a project to spread awareness for the cause. Through Reshaping the Sickle, Chuka introduced his doctor to Nigerian officials and has started two clinics in the community.

Connor Flexman

location: Sleepy Hollow, IL

college: Brown University

Community Impact: Sports has provided Connor with the tools to become an effective leader. Determined to make a change in his community, Connor stepped out of his comfort zone and took on some leadership opportunities. He started his school’s Environmental Club from scratch and as the President, reorganized the school’s recycling program, coordinated fundraisers, and organized several volunteer activities to spread awareness about environmental activism.

Corey Laughlin

location: Pueblo, CO

sport(s): Baseball, Football, Wrestling

gpa: 3.8

college: Colorado University - Pueblo

Community Impact: While gearing up for the spring baseball season, Corey realized that his excess sports equipment would be useful to less fortunate kids, so he held a community garage sale. Determined to get others involved, Corey advertised the sale in his local newspapers, radio, and distributed flyers. The sale raised over $1,200, which was used towards scholarships for twelve local youth. Additionally, some of the equipment was sent to Mexico to aid sports programs. Corey was recognized for his efforts by Senator Scott Tipton in the 112th Congress of the United States House of Representatives!

David Cruikshank

location: Larchmont, NY

sport(s): Figure Skating

gpa: 4.0

college: Princeton University

Community Impact: When a local ice rink providing free lessons to children was in danger of closing due to low funding, David took it upon himself to help. He successfully organized and produced a skating show to raise money for the rink. In its first year, David raised over $15,000! Since the show was such a success, David decided to keep the performances going. His second show featured celebrity appearances by prominent performers in the skating world, and in turn, raised over $18,000. Needless to say, David is already excited and ready to plan and produce his third charity skating show.

Dennis Ojogho

location: Los Angeles, CA

sport(s): Basketball

gpa: 4.12

college: Harvard University

Community Impact: Inspired by his team’s motto, “BETTER,” Dennis took on leadership roles in his community by founding the student-led animal rights group, Progressive Animal Welfare Society (aka PAWS). Every month, the organization collects donations from members of the community to donate to local shelters. Dennis has influenced others by helping to register 20 of the groups’ members as volunteers at the South LA Animal Shelter. His commitment to making a difference has paid off, and PAWS is now sponsored by a local community organization, Champions USA!

Elizabeth Hyde

location: Chatham, NJ

sport(s): Lacrosse, Soccer

gpa: 4.0

college: Dartmouth College

Community Impact: Elizabeth organized a soccer tournament in her community after a fellow teammate was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The tournament raised over $2,500 and 500 cans of food for the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation, a New Jersey cancer foundation that supports over 270 families of children with cancer. Through her tournament, Elizabeth brought a sense of joy to both the Chatham soccer community and her entire town.

Ian MacLean

location: South Hamilton, MA

sport(s): Soccer, Track & Field

gpa: 3.48

college: Babson University

Community Impact: Ian credits sports as helping him to grow into a strong leader. He has used skills learned on the field to lead his student body as President, represent his school and region at the State Student Advisory Council and run charity events. In support of his sister—who has a bone marrow failure disease—Ian organized a carnival/craft fair to raise money for AAMDSIF, an organization which supports patients with aplastic anemia and MDS (Myelodysplastic Syndromes).

Jada Webster

location: Westlake Village, CA

sport(s): Basketball

gpa: 4.0

college: Stanford University

Community Impact: Jada is motivated to lead by example, both in her school, and in her community. She is the current Teen President of Jack and Jill of America and has received honors such as the President’s Volunteer Service Award and the Youth Service Leader Award. She has taken her passion towards community service to other levels, developing an interactive Bilingual Story Time program, and participating in New Moon Girls Media, an online magazine geared towards giving girls around the world a platform for self-expression.

James Tanner Field

location: Phoenix, AZ

sport(s): Baseball, Golf

gpa: 3.8

college: Utah State University

Community Impact: James is no stranger to community involvement. He is the President of the Glendale Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission, volunteers for Streetlight (a non-profit organization that focuses on eradicating child exploitation), and has been an active member of his school student body. James also single-handedly organized and executed a day-long golf tournament for athletes with special needs.

Joseph William Skavroneck

location: Waxhaw, NC

gpa: 3.91

sport(s): Basketball

college: University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

Community Impact: Inspired by his coaches who he credits as strong leaders and role models, Joseph took initiative by organizing a 5K race to raise money for Turning Point, a shelter for battered women. The fundraiser was a huge success, raising over $5,500 dollars and generating 1,000 spectators and 550 runners. Committed to finding a long-term solution to domestic violence, he wrote a ‘Teen Dating Violence Prevention Education Bill,’ which is receiving support from members of North Carolina Congress. As President of Students Against Domestic/Dating Abuse, he is committed to stopping violence before it starts.

Katherine Marie Stone

location: Fort Walton Beach, FL

sport(s): Sailing, Soccer, Swimming, Diving, Track & Field

gpa: 4.0

college: Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Community Impact: Katherine has an outstanding commitment to community service, racking up over 3,000 hours of volunteer work with SOCKS, her local animal shelter. She realized the importance of spreading volunteerism, and led a project involving over 40 students from eight schools, which allowed the shelter to be turned into an adoption center! Her sense of camaraderie on and off the field has made her an asset to her community.

Laney Emmalyn Evers

location: Falmouth, ME

sport(s): Basketball, Volleyball

gpa: 4.0

college: Duke University

Community Impact: In the wake of a murder-suicide involving her coach, Laney started a not-for-profit organization, the Taylor Memorial Fund, to raise money for children who have lost parents due to domestic violence. Through an annual Basketball tournament, Laney and the Taylor Memorial Fund have raised $38,000 and are currently supporting six families in the Maine area.

Michael Anthony Catalano

location: Smithtown, NY

sport(s): Cross Country, Track & Field

gpa: 4.0

college: University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

Community Impact: Michael has held leadership responsibilities since he was a freshman in high school. When devastation came in the form of cancer to his late, inspirational track & field coach, Michael used his leadership skills to bring his heartbroken community together. Michael organized a 5K run to honor his coach and join the effort to eradicate cancer. After weeks of work and preparation, the race brought together 50 volunteers, 500 runners and over $15,000.

Noama Iftekhar

location: Santa Clara, CA

sport(s): Dance, Tennis, Track & Field

gpa: 4.43

college: University of California, Berkeley

Community Impact: After her beloved tennis chaperone went into remission from Leukemia, Noama decided to create a 24-hour tennis marathon to raise funds for cancer research. The first marathon raised over $1,000, the success of which, sparked two additional tennis marathon events. On a family trip to Pakistan, Noama devoted much of her time as a volunteer play therapist at Pakistan’s Shaukat Khanum Cancer Memorial Hospital and Research Centre, which provides free medical care to the impoverished afflicted with cancer. During that time, she helped children escape the emotional and physical trauma of chemotherapy through physical activity and play. To help the hospital’s courageous fighters, she even raised 30,000 rupees. Noama is already planning her next trip to Pakistan where she plans on volunteering again and raising even more money to support the fight against childhood cancer.

Rachel Duong

location: San Diego, CA

sport(s): Cross Country, Track & Field

gpa: 3.98

college: Amherst College

Community Impact: Rachel has had many leadership experiences on and off the track. They all paid off when she had the opportunity to fight for a cause close to her heart: hunger. By leading her team and inspiring volunteers at food drives, Rachel was able to lobby for bills in Sacramento, CA on World Hunger Day. Thanks to her hard work, three bills were later signed into law.

Victoria Jimenez

location: Miami, FL

sport(s): Basketball

gpa: 3.8

college: Brown University

Community Impact: At 4’10,’’ Victoria is the shortest one on the basketball court. However, what she lacks in inches, she makes up in leadership. In 2011, Victoria started Girls Innovate thRu Learning Science (G.I.R.L.S) to empower young at-risk girls in the Miami, FL area through science. Through G.I.R.L.S, Victoria has brought 60 girls from the city’s under-privileged schools to the University of Miami to learn about different fields in sciences. Victoria has also volunteered since the fifth grade at “The Barnyard,” a local safe-haven for students that encourages education and sports as a means for continued development and growth.
