2009 National Grid Foundation Winners

Scituate High School. Scituate, RI

Scituate students:

  • Distributed filtered reusable water bottles and canvas bags and over 200 CFLs to members of their community
  • Launched a brand new recycling program at their Community Art Festival
  • Salvaged rain barrels from local restaurants for lawn care
  • Sent reminders to all teachers to turn off lights and computers when not in-use
  • Organized an "energy night" for 8 Rhode Island schools and members of the State Energy Department that will be featured in an upcoming Physical Science textbook!
  • Built a biodiesel production tank and filmed the process to raise awareness
  • Displayed at URI's Energy Expo attended by over 4,000 people
  • Launched an eco blog!

Boston Latin High School. Boston, MA

Boston Latin students:

  • Rewired the cafeteria to select how many light bulbs are used
  • Demanded controlled ventilation in the gym
  • Installed motion sensors in the library
  • Had an energy booth at the Boston Children's Museum Energy Fair
  • Made announcements on the school's morning news
  • Built a 100 foot fishing net to help collect toxic trash!

MS 447. Brooklyn, NY

MS 447 students:

  • Launched their school's first ever paper, plastic and aluminum recycling program
  • Spoke out for energy saving policy change before the New York Department of Education
  • Attended rallies at City Hall to push for district wide change!
  • Distributed "Be Cool, Recycle in School" t-shirts worn by students during the campaign
  • Held school wide assemblies and screenings of environmental films

Berkshire School. Sheffield, MA

Berkshire students:

  • Launched a composting program in their cafeteria
  • Put recycling bins in each students' dorm
  • Ran an e-waste drive
  • Collected vegetable oil from the student center to convert to biofuel
  • Petitioned for hybrid vehicles in the school's auto fleet (and won!)
  • Worked with local businesses and public high schools to help them calculate their carbon footprint
