National Supermarket Chain Fires Plastic Bags
Supermarket chain Whole Foods said Tuesday that it would stop offering plastic grocery bags, giving customers instead a choice between recycled paper or reusable bags. The chainwide ban will begin on Earth Day, April 22nd. A rising number of governments and retailers are banning plastic bags, or discouraging their use, because of concerns about their environmental impact.

Sanderson High School’s DS Club in Raleigh, NC
Project: - Half Full Carpool Day
Sanderson High Do Something Club sponsored a school wide event to raise awareness about the many benefits of carpooling. The challenge: to only fill half of the parking lot on event day and kick-off an entire year of carpooling! They held a raffle as incentive, giving tickets to students who pledged to carpool, walk, or bike to school. The school’s Environmental Awareness Club helped out by broadcasting videos letting students know how carpooling cuts down on pollution and gas costs, not to mention traffic!

Paul Cruickshank State: MA Age: 25
Project: Seeding Labs
Description: Seeding Labs reclaims and refurbishes laboratory equipment from universities, hospitals and biotechnology companies in order to equip talented scientists and clinicians living and working in the developing world. Seeding Labs believes that talent is everywhere, but resources are not. Funds needed to support first-rate research are scarce or non-existent in most developing countries. Seeding Lab's goal is to help scientists return to their homelands, pursue the research that matters most to them, and seed a thriving homegrown scientific research community that will benefit future generations. Since they began in 2002 they have shipped over 300,000 worth of equipment to labs on three continents. |
