As we get close to Father's Day, we'd like to call out 11 awesome dads who stand out for standing up:
Even if your dad painted your roof with the American flag, dressed as Uncle Sam year-round, and woke you up every morning singing the Star-Spangled Banner, he still wouldn't win for most patriotic. George Washington, the first Prez and father of our country, has that in the bag.
Brad Pitt has six kids, which is impressive in and of itself, but he also leads two major relief organizations, Make It Right (which helps to rebuild the lower 9th ward in New Orleans) and Not On Our Watch (committed to securing peace in Sudan), donates tons of money to other awesome non-profits and is in a domestic partnership (definitely in real life and maybe on Facebook) with UN Ambassador/tomb raider Angelina Jolie.
Martin Luther King Jr. dreamed of his children growing up in a world where they were regarded on the basis of their character, not on the color of their skin. He dedicated his life to making sure his vision became a reality.
When racial inequality was the status quo, To Kill a Mockingbird's Atticus Finch (a.k.a the most ballin' dad of all the dads we met via our high school reading lists) taught his kids to stand up for justice no matter how unpopular they'd become.
Kurt Hummel's relationship with his dad Burt Hummel (we'll forgive the semi-identical names) on Glee is one after which other fathers and sons could model their own. Kurt loves and accepts his father, despite his dad's inability to appreciate couture fashion and Broadway musicals. And Burt learns how to have an LGBT-modified birds and bees talk with his son to show his full support of Kurt's journey through adolesence.
President Barack Obama's relationship with his daughters, Sasha and Malia, has shown that a big job and a busy schedule is no excuse for slacking on dad duties. He's the leader of the free world and a great dad.
Who says all vampires are bloodsucking stars of our nightmares? Definitely no one on Team Edward—or Team Carlisle. Edward Cullen's dad, Carlisle Cullen, shows just how powerful compassion can be. Dr. Cullen is a strict vegetarian and completely resists the temptation for human blood.
Hugh Jackman is a cool dad because he uses Twitter. He's an even cooler dad because he uses Twitter to give away $100,000 to charity.
Ashton Kutcher is the step-dad to Demi Moore's kids and deserves some dad recognition, too. He and Demi started the DNA Foundation to prevent child sex trafficking.
Matt Damon is one of the causiest celebs around, devoting tons of time and energy to solving the African water crisis, securing peace in Sudan and preventing the spread of HIV and AIDS. He and his wife also have four adorable kids!
The super talented Neil Patrick Harris and his boyfriend are new parents to twins, and he also helps prevent LGBT suicide with the Trevor Project, promotes environmentalism with Global Green, and ensures adequate HIV and AIDS treatment is available with AIDS Healthcare Foundation.
