Arizona immigration crackdown on HOLD

Hoooooooooo, snap! Just as Arizona was gearing up to put its new immigration law into effect today, a federal judge put a stop to the legislation. The Justice Department, civil rights groups and an Arizona police officer asked a federal judge to prevent the law from being enforced. One of the most controversial parts of the law- requiring police check the immigration status while enforcing other laws- is on hold.

  • Arizona is a huge gateway for immigrants and, often, crime. Lawmakers have said they designed the law to assist federal immigration investigations and lessen problems with border crossing. They aim to reduce their expenditures on education, prison, and healthcare for undocumented (illegal) immigrants.
  • There has been a huge national response out of concern that the law could lead to rampant racial profiling and distract police from other priorities. There are also questions as to whether or not the law is Constitutional and in conflict with federal law.
  • The ruling came as the Arizona police force was readying itself to begin enacting the law, and protesters were readying themselves to stage a rally. There have been many rallies challenging the law, and other activist action from around the country. Athletes and celebrities have been particularly vocal.
  • Along with the requirement to check immigration status, the ruling delayed parts of the law requiring immigrants to carry papers at all times and prohibiting undocumented immigrants to apply for work in public places. The judge blocked police from arresting suspected undocumented immigrants without a warrant.
  • Only the controversial aspects of the law are on hold until they're resolved in court. The other sections of the law go into effect tomorrow.
  • The governor of Arizona says the state is likely to appeal the federal ruling.

What can you do?

Get your voice in the mix! This is evidence that it will be heard. Organize a rally. Get loud, stay peaceful.
