Bloom box, what?

Going green is all the rage these days and businesses know it. That's why over 100 start-ups in Silicon Valley alone are working on creating the next innovation in clean energy. One of them, Bloom Energy, went public this past week with its invention: a little power plant-in-a-box that they want in every backyard in America by 2020.

Aerospace engineer K.R. Sridhar invited "60 Minutes" correspondent Lesley Stahl for a first look at the innards of the Bloom box that his company is promising will revolutionize energy.

So, what is it?

Basically, it’s collection of fuel cells -- very skinny batteries – that use oxygen and fuel to create electricity with no emissions and no need for power lines.

One refrigerator sized unit could power a small business or an average American home, but four to six homes in India where citizens don’t use as much energy.

What’s the catch? One box costs about $700K-$800K! ACK! That's why the customers are giants like Google, FedEx, and Walmart that can afford the expensive units.

Bloom Energy hasn’t figured out how to mass-produce the unit or get the cost down to a more reasonable figure that the average American can afford.

What can you do?

In the meantime, there’s much you can do to live a greener existence.
