CFLs: A bright idea or passing fad?

Does it feel like everyone has caught on to the recent eco-friendly trends? While it may seem like the world has embraced a greener-is-better attitude, recent sales in the U.S. may point to another reality.

The sale of compact fluorescent light bulbs of CFLs has gone down recently, despite their status as one of the cheapest and easiest ways to go green. In some U.S. states, sales are down as much as 50%.

CFLs can be found for around $2, and can last up to 7 times longer than normal bulbs. They also use less energy, saving you extra dough on your monthly energy bill. Still, almost 90% of American sockets are lit up with incandescent (non-CFL) bulbs.

So what gives? Some blame poor marketing for the failure of CFLs to catch on in the U.S., even though they’ve been around for over 10 years.

If you're interested in going greener, replacing the bulbs in your house is an easy first step. There are lots of other easy tips to conserve energy too.
