Gang violence erupts in Chicago

Last Thursday, two Chicago-based rival gangs got into a fight outside a community center, three blocks from their high school. A deadly fistfight broke out, allegedly one fight in a series of recent violent episodes between the two gangs.

16-year-old honor student Derrion Albert was hit in the head by a student wielding a wooden board. He immediately fell to the pavement, and gangmembers started stomping on and punching him.

His mother told reporters that witnesses said he was “trying to help another student and kind of got mixed in with the crowd.”

The entire fight lasted less than five minutes, but cost Derrion Albert his life. Authorities say he was a shy kid, who had no gang affiliations.

Gang violence is escalating in Chicago recently, and police are investigating the death of Derrion Albert in an attempt to catch some of the gangmembers behind the tragedy.
